今回の旅行中，私が最初に訪れたのはブラジル北部サルバドール市近郊（きんこう）にあるジャイール神父（ “Fr.
彼ドム・トマス師（訳注・「ドム “Dom” 」，「師」＝神父．（大）修道院長や，司祭で高位の聖職に就（つ）く聖職者に対する敬称．）はベネディクト（修道）会士で（ “The Benedictine Dom Thomas” ）リオ・デ・ジャネイロから少し離れたノバ・フリブルゴ（ “Nova Friburgo” ）近郊（きんこう）の山中（さんちゅう）にある修道院の院長をつとめておられる方です（ “The Benedictine Dom Thomas is Prior of the Monastery in the mountains near Nova Friburgo behind Rio de Janeiro. ” ）．この修道院はドム・ジェラール師（ “Dom Gérard” ）がルフェーブル大司教（ “Archbishop Lefebvre” ）から激励（げきれい）と支援（しえん）を受けて1970年代にフランスで設立した伝統派ベネディクト会修道院の分派（ぶんぱ）（ “as an offshoot from the Traditional Benedictine Monastery” ）として1980年代に同じくドム・ジェラール師によって設立されました（ “It was founded in the 1980’s by Dom Gérard as an offshoot from the Traditional Benedictine Monastery which Dom Gérard had also founded in France in the 1970’s, with the encouragement and support of Archbishop Lefebvre.” ）．ところが，1988年ルフェーブル大司教が数名の司教を聖別されたとき，ドム・ジェラール師は同大司教と袂（たもと）を分（わ）かち，自ら設立した修道院を新教会（ “the Newchurch” ）に移しました（ “However, when the Archbishop consecrated bishops in 1988, Dom Gérard broke with him, took his monastery into the Newchurch, …” ）．その際，彼は大西洋を渡（わた）り，ブラジルの修道院についても同じ処置（しょち）をしました（ “… and crossed the ocean to do the same with the Brazilian monastery.” ）．
そこで，彼は当時まだ若い修道僧だったドム・トマス師からの強い抵抗を受けました（ “Here he ran into the resistance of Dom Thomas, who was still only a young monk, …” ）．ドム・トマス師は修道僧になる前，著名なブラジル人カトリック信徒グスタボ・コルサゥン（ “Gustavo Corção” ）から新教会（ “the Newchurch” ）の間違いについて深く学んでいました（ “…but who before becoming a monk had learned in depth from a famous Brazilian lay Catholic, Gustavo Corção, the wrongness of the Newchurch.” ）．善良な一般信徒たちとルフェーブル大司教からの助力を得て，ドム・トマス師はドム・ジェラール師に反対して立ち上がり，同修道院を伝統派に取り戻しました（ “With help from good laymen and with the support of Archbishop Lefebvre, Dom Thomas stood up to Dom Gérard and saved the Monastery for Tradition.” ）．このようなことが過去にあっただけに，ドム・トマス師もまた新教会（ “the Newchurch” ），新修道会（ “the Newsociety” ）の実情（じつじょう）をはっきり見通（みとお）しているとしても何の不思議（ふしぎ）もありません（ “With such a clash behind him it is not surprising that Dom Thomas also sees very clearly the situation both of the Newchurch and of the Newsociety. ” ）．私たちは，小さな修道院の教会の外に聖週間の諸行事に訪（おとず）れる人々のために特別に設（もう）けられたテントの中で，洗足（せんぞく）木曜日の聖油聖別（ “the Maundy Thursday Consecreation of Holy Oils” ）を祝いました．そこには，ほんの少数の司祭たちしか列席していませんでしたが，それ以外の必要なものはすべてそろっていました（ “In a tent set up outside the small Monastery church for the extra visitors to the Holy Week ceremonies, we celebrated with few priests but with all the essentials the Maundy Thursday Consecration of Holy Oils.” ）．新修道会が聖油の供給を止めてしまう可能性があったので，今年は修道院がとくに司祭たちのために聖油を用意しました（ “These the Monastery can now supply for this year to priests in particular whose supply could be cut off by the Newsociety.” ）．
それから，私は北へ飛び，アメリカ合衆国で勇敢（ゆうかん）な二人の神父たち，すなわちジョゼフ・ファイファー神父とデーヴィッド・ヒューコ神父（ “brave Frs, Joseph Pfeiffer and David Hewko” ）が立ち上げた抵抗運動の中心地3か所を訪れました（ “Then I flew north to visit three more centres of the Resistance being launched in the USA by the brave Frs Joseph Pfeiffer and David Hewko.” ）．その3か所はコネチカット州近くとニュージャージー州，ミネソタ州にあります．それぞれの地で私は，新修道会で進行中のことに疑（うたが）いの目を向けるカトリック信徒たちのために堅信礼（けんしんれい，＝堅振〈堅信〉の秘蹟〈ひせき〉）を授（さず）けるとともに数回の会合（かいごう）（ “Confirmations and conferences” ）を開くことができました（ “Near Connecticut, in New Jersey and in Minnesota I was able to give Confirmations and conferences to Catholics suspicious of what is going on in the Newsociety.” ）．信徒たちから良い質問が続出し，いずれも誠実に答えるに値（あたい）するものばかりでした（ “They had good questions, deserving of truthful answers.” ）．
